Arthur's mother, Nell Totten, died after childbirth. "The country doctor had come from a blood poisoning case to deliver Nell's third child. Nell contracted blood poisoning bacteria from the doctor (no sanitation then) and died three weeks later. Arthur only lived a few months and died of a cold."
