"MRS. RUTH GARLOW

Mrs. Ruth Garlow died at her home on the corner of Walnut and Hamilton street in Bryan, on Sept. 24th, aged 88 years and 28 days. She was the widow of William Garlow, who lived here for many years and was well known in the affairs of the town during his active life.
Funeral services were held at her late residence. Rev. D. G. Hall officiating and the burial was in Fountain Grove cemetery."

from the Bryan Press, Oct. 2, 1924, page5/col.6
-----------------------

Ruth married William Garloch on December 24, 1856 in Gratiot, Ohio..
Wm. was also known Wm. Garlow.
They then moved to Bryan, Ohio.

William enlisted in the Civil War and had been wounded in 1864 at Spottsylvania, VA..

Not having children, they adopted an infant daughter, Ellen Hulbert, born in 1870.
Ellen's mother had died not too long after her birth. Possibly her father thought it best for her to be raised by the adopting couple, than just by himself, being newly widowed.

As Ellen's (Ella), middle name is Amanda,
it is possible that the middle name was given to her, due to William's adult sister, Amanda Garlow, who was living with and being taken care of by Wm. and Ruth, at the time of Ella's adoption by them. (Amanda Garlow had some disabilities.)

Years later. Ella and her husband, Samuel Wirick, help take care of elderly stroke-paralyzed William, until his death.
