Lewis Whitehead wrote his brother John in August 1864 about the explosion at the Crater at Petersburg. He wrote home, "We had fifteen killed and wounded the day the fort blew up. Two of them belonged to our Company. Corporals Wilcox and White were the men who were killed." Otis Wilcox and Lewis Whitehead were both in Company B of the 21st Connecticut.

Otis Wilcox was from Hartford, Connecticut when he enlisted in August 1862 as a private in the 21st. He was promoted to Corporal March 1, 1863.
