Admiral and statesman. He joined the French Navy in 1831 and established a distinguished record ending in his promotion to Rear-Admiral in 1869. He served as Governor of Senegal and fought in the Crimean and Franco-Prussian Wars. He was elected a Senator for life to the French Legislature (1879) and served as Minister of the Navy (1879 to 1883). The battleship Jauréguiberry, in service from 1897 to 1919, and destroyer Jauréguiberry, in service from 1958 to 1977, were named in his honor.
