"The future is not to know, and it may never be,
So let us live and give our best,
Never anticipating or doubting the power of our Savior;
Asking nothing of tomorrow except -

"THY WILL BE DONE"

Vera Mae Given Allen made her triumphant physical entry into God's beautiful world on Saturday, June 11, 1927, to the late Sammie and Rosie Givens in Carroll County, Mississippi. Vera was the first (1st) child born to this union. Her loving parents, Sammie and Rosie, seven (7) siblings, and a grandson, Willie Nunn, preceded her in death.

Vera became a Christian at an early age having been baptized in the Holiness faith.

On December 18, 1946, at nineteen years of age Vera married Preston Allen, a wonderful man. To this union was born four children: Preston, Jr. (Lizzie); Charles; Morris (Audrey); and Dorothy 'Jackie' (Walter). Although they were not biological parents, they were special parents to Etta 'Pookie' (Frank).

Vera moved with Preston to Belzoni with their four children in 1951. They immediately sought a church to satisfy the spiritual needs of their family. That church was Zion Rock Missionary Baptist Church. There she served as a choir member, announcement clerk, Sunday School teacher, and youth leader.

Vera's home was one that one could always find good singing, music, and many children. Many knew and loved her as a mother and called her "Mother" or "Mama Vera."

Vera with her husband Preston organized the first Belzoni Youth Choir in their home in 1962. This dedicated couple would transport children throughout Humphreys County and surrounding counties singing of God's goodness.

For many years Vera was employed as a cosmetologist. She completed her training at Bradley's School of Cosmetology in Greenwood, Mississippi. Vera was also employed as a nurse's assistant and worked at Greenwood Leflore and Humphreys County Hospitals.

After retirement, Vera devoted many hours of service to the McNair Elementary School ass a faithful volunteer and advocate for teachers and students. She was honored many times for duties as a volunteer.

In 1998 Vera along with her husband, Preston united with Weeping Mary Baptist Church in Isola, Mississippi, pastored by their son, Reverend Morris Allen. As a member of Weeping Mary Baptist Church, Vera, now called "Mother Vera" because of her work on the Mother Board, continued faithfully sending up timbers to build God's Kingdom on earth. How proud she was in the completion of the new edifice in which Weeping Mary now worships.

All who knew Vera loved her. Her husband Preston of fifty-five (55) years, children, family, and many, many friends (young and old) had a deep respect for this wonderful, God-fearing woman. She will solely be missed.

After nine (9) months of physical separation, Vera now has reunited with Preston whom she affectionately called "Honey". Honey went on to glory earlier in September 2002 to prepare their home in heaven with the Lord.

She leaves to cherish her loving memory five children who adored and respected her; two brothers: Leo Givens of Toledo, Ohio; Ungo (Shirley) Givens of Chicago, IL; six sisters: Earlene Nalls of Oak Park, IL; Eloise Sample of Greenwood, MS; Georgia Ann (Cleveland) of Greenwood, MS; Marguerite (Theodore) Hyde, Betty (Samuel) Johnson, Doretha (Freddie) Coleman all of Toledo, OH; three brothers-in-law: Reverend John Q. (Earline) Allen, Sr. of Muskegon, MI; Elder Frank (Mattie) Allen, Sr. of Vicksburg, MS; and Nathaniel (Ann) Allen, Jr. of Oklahoma City, OK; two sisters-in-law: Naomi Pruitt of Adams, WI; and Denise (James) Wolfe of Jackson, TN; a loving uncle and aunt, Norman and Sutter Cobbins, Sr. of Blackhawk, MS; twelve (12) grandchildren: Wilhelm, Rene, Andrea, Sybilli, Walter, III, Maurice, Jamila, Rene Charles, Herbert, Wynton, Frank, III, and Christian; fifteen (15) great-grandchildren, who will honor and cherish her memory forever, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many, many friends.
