His mother, Caroline, died on August 29, 1927. In the 1930 and 1940 Census, Hjalmer was living in Fessenden, North Dakota and working as a plumber. Hjalmer died in his room located in the Conner Hotel in Fessenden, North Dakota on May 13, 1958 at the age of 87. He was buried in Prairie Home Cemetery, New Rockford, North Dakota on May 17, 1958 next to his brother, Olaf and his mother, Caroline.
