Silas Hatcher was a member of the 190th Virginia Militia, Company G with the rank of Ordnance Sergeant and later the 23rd Battalion Virginia Infantry, Company G with the rank of Sergeant.
Fought along with his son Austin Jeter Hatcher at the Battle of Droop Mountain. He also would have fought with both his sons Austin Jeter Hatcher and James Edward Hatcher at the Battle of New Market, the Battle of North Anna, the Battle of Cold Harbor, the Battle of Lynchburg, the Second Battle of Kernstown, and the Third Battle of Winchester.
At the Third Battle of Winchester, Silas and Austin would find themselves captured by Union forces. They were sent together to the POW camp at Point Lookout, Maryland where they were held until a prisoner exchange was held on March 15th, 1865.
