She was married twice. First to William Dixon, her second was to George Dixon. The two husbands were kin, but not brothers. Nancy was know as "Aunt Nancy" and she was a remarkable woman. Left a widow on a small plot of poor land she completed the rearing of a large family and has stamped upon four generations of descendants the impress of her character. She was among the first members of Oakland Church and would walk two and a half miles to a church conference and give her hard earned "quarterage". This incident illustrates the force of her character: Her son, Thomas, a soldier, was ill in the Confederate Army around Petersburg. The N and W tracts were torn up as far as Zuni. She walked with Sarah Ann, her daughter, from her home to Blackwater Bridge a distance of 15 miles, to get within the Confederate lines and comfort her suffering son.
