Musician. Born Winford Lindsey Stewart in Morrisville, Missouri, He was a singer, songwriter, guitar player and one of the progenitors of the renowned Bakersfield sound. In 1948, he moved to California and formed a band that played at clubs around California. He signed a recording contract with the independent label Intro Records in 1954, releasing two singles "I've Waited a Lifetime" and "Strolling". Both failed to make the country charts but did well on the pop charts. By the summer of 1956, he signed with Capitol and produced many hits to include "Another Day Another Dollar", "One More Memory", "Sing A Sad Song" and I Wish I Could Stay the Same". During the 1960s, he performed six nights a week and also hosted his own television show in Las Vegas, before relocating to Bakersfield, California, in 1965. There he continued recording producing some of his finest work in the 1960s and 1970s, such as "Paint Me a Rainbow", "Cause I Have You" and "It's Such A Pretty World Today" which reached number one on the country charts, won Song of the Year and a Gold record. He started his own label called WIN in 1978, recorded smooth country pop tunes and performed into the mid 1980s. He suddenly died of a heart attack while on an extensive tour to promote a new album.
