August Schütz was born in July 1841 or 1842 in Dettendorf in the Kingdom of Bavaria. Like many others in the Middle Franconia region of Bavaria, he was a brewer. August immigrated to New York City in 1868. He married Louisa Kettner, from Wildbad, Wuerttemberg, in on October 7, 1868 at the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in the village of Edgewater on Staten Island.

Louisa and August lived in the village of Middletown, Richmond County (Staten Island), New York for a few years before moving to 56th Street in Manhattan in the 1870′s. August continued working as a brewer and became a naturalized citizen.

August and Louisa had ten children by 1900, though only six survived to see the turn of the century. The children we know about include:

August M. Schutz (Jul 1869 – ?)
George Schutz (Nov 1873 – ?)
Charlie Schutz (abt 1874 – ?)
William "Willie" Schutz (Feb 1875 – ?)
Johnnie Schutz (Aug 1879 – ?)
Louise Marie Schutz (22 Jun 1887 – ?)

At some point before 1900, August and Louisa moved to 704 Washington St in Manhattan. Louisa died on March 23, 1909. August was no longer working by 1900, but some of the children continued to live with him until at least 1910 and probably until he died on June 28, 1912.

Probate notice:
SCHUTZ, AUGUST, (died June 28;) left $3,000 personalty: legacies of unestimated value to Louise, August, George, William P., Charles and John Schutz, children.
