Paul Pocorena, l9-year-old Bakersfield youth, was the a victim in the week-end races. He was fatally injured in a five-car collision at the tin lizzie derby staged at Franklin Field on the outskirts of Taft, california. Taken to a hospital there young Pocorena who lived at 122 East Sixth street here, was pronounced dead on arrival.
The body of Pocorena was taken to Taft undertaking parlors. The youth Is survived by his parents, John and Rose Pocorena, three brothers and, one sister, all of Bakersfield.
Young Pocorena was the winner of the previous derby held here on April 9. Yesterday he had placed among the first five in a preliminary race and was running sixth in the
main event at the time of the accident. The fatal crash occurred on the backstretch of the track, on the opposite side of the field from the grandstand. Shrouded by a cloud of dust the crash happened so rapidly that few spectators viewed it. Pocorena's car apparently swerved, turned over and hit the rail. The driver was thrown out as the car
went over, according to witnesses. The other four cars involved piled up behind, but did not crash hard enough to injure the drivers.
