James moved with his parents to Wilkes County, North Carolina, where he enlisted in the Militia. A Revolutionary War soldier and Private in the North Carolina Militia, James served for a time under Colonel Cleveland. He was one of the men that accompanied John Sevier in the last battle of the Revolution, the Battle of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee.

The John Sevier Chapter and the Benjamin Cleveland Chapter, Sons Of The American Revolution, assisted in a ceremony marking the grave, in honor of James Davis, as a Revolutionary Patriot, on October 9, 2004. The grave is located on the Davis property, his wife Mary, marriage dated 1782, is buried in the adjacent grave.
*This Cemetery was mistakenly re-named Montgomery Cemetery in 1930 during the Tennessee Valley Authority survey of the surrounding lands.
