Harrison traveled and sold patent medicine compounded by his brother Dr. Isaac Darnell (probably not a trained physician), in the northern counties of Kentucky and southern counties of Ohio. He married twice, first to Louisa B. Himes, 30 Oct 1839 in Brown County, Ohio by James McClain, (daughter of Charles Himes and Elizabeth Rea Himes), and second to Jeanette Ruark 9th Sep 1867 in Lewis County, Kentucky (daughter of James Ruark and Rachel Cropper Ruark). (Jeanette is buried under her maiden name, and no mention is made of her in his will.) Evidently he was also known informally (even without a license) as Dr. since his obituary states Dr. Darnell. In the 1880 U.S. Census, he reported his occupation as a peddler practicing medicine.

The Evening Bulletin (Maysville, Ky.: ) 3 Jan 1899
