On June 30, 1956 United flight 718 left Los Angeles en route to Chicago with 58 people on board. Around the same time TWA flight 2 left Los Angeles bound for Kansas City with 70 people on board. The two planes collided in midair over the Grand Canyon, killing all 128 people. Theories abound as to what happened, but the most probable explanation was the two pilots did not see each other in time to avoid the collision due to clouds, distraction, etc. According to Citizens Cemetery, the passengers were brought to Flagstaff and buried in a mass grave because a majority of them were unidentifiable.
