Poet. He was the lord chief baron of the exchequer of Ireland and was educated at Trinity College Oxford, England. He began his literary career as a poet with “The Sophy” (1641), followed by his much acclaimed “Cooper's Hill” (1642), which is the first example in English of a poem devoted to local description. It is the first example in English of a poem devoted to local description and received extravagant praise from English writer Samuel Johnson. He also published books of verse such as “The Anatomy of Play” (1651), “Windsor Forest” (1655) and “The Destruction of Troy” (1656). In 1663, he was also made a Knight of the Bath.
