William Cantwell enlisted on December 17, 1862. Pvt William Cantwell was captured near Farmington, Tennessee, on October 7, 1863. He was forwarded as a Prisoner of War from Military Prison, Louisville, Kentucky, to Camp Morton, Indiana, on October 15, 1863. He died of typhus malarial fever on August 23, 1864, and was buried at Green Lawn Cemetery, Grave No. 1083.

Died as a Confederate Prisoner of War at Camp Morton, originally interred at Green Lawn Cemetery (Confederate Section), but reinterred in 1933 in a mass grave of 1616 Confederate POW'S at Crown Hill.
