Blanche was born April 24, 1925 in Darlington, SC to Rufus and Rosa (Garner) Spann. She married her "soldier boy" LeRoy Martin Cohnen on December 19, 1945 and he preceded her in death in 1997 after 52 years of marriage. Also preceding her in death were her parents and two sisters and their husbands, Louise (Bob) McCauley and Ruth (Richard) Cathcart.
She is survived by two daughters; Sandra (husband, Richard) Stoye of Springfield and Bonnie Garner (husband, Bob Hickman) of Pisgah Forest, NC, three grandchildren; Bobby Stoye of Dawson, IL; Kellee (Todd) Sporrer of New Berlin, and Kristen (Christopher) DeBenedetto of CA, four great grandchildren; Richard Cody and Justin Tyler Stoye both of Dawson and Cayden Matthew Sporrer of New Berlin, and expecting an arrival in August of her fourth great grandchild Jack DeBenedetto, brother-in-law; Melvin Cohnen of TX and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Blanche was a member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Springfield. She retired from the State of Illinois Department of Transportation. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi Sorority where she spent almost 50 years with her beloved "sorority sisters". She looked forward to playing cards with her sorority sisters and never missed the annual Sorority Pizza and Pie fundraisers. She always mentioned how blessed she was to have traveled to Hawaii and Germany with LeRoy. She loved to listen to music by Barry Manilow, enjoyed being outside in her yard with all her plants, flowers and her poodle, "Buttons". She was an avid scrap-booker.
Visitation: 4 – 7 p.m., Sunday, May 22, 2011 at Staab Funeral Home.
Funeral Service: 11:00 a.m. Monday, May 23, 2011 at Staab Funeral Home with Reverend Greg Busboom officiating. Burial will be at Oak Ridge Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Lincoln Memorial Gardens Nature Preserve or the Animal Shelter in Benld, IL.
