James McBride volunteered for service in the Civil War and fought in the Battle of Vicksburg. Apparently several years later, he died as a result of disease he acquired in the service. He never married and interment in Wooster Cemetery requires confirmation.

James entered the army in 1861, volunteering in the three months service, subsequently enlisting in the 16th O. V. I. for three years, and serving out the whole period. He received a wound in his head in the battle of Vicksburg, and contracted disease in the service, which culminated in his death in the fall of 1868.
