Sarah Johnson was born near Lexington, Ky., April 24, 1827. When she was a child four years of age, her parents moved to Randolph Co., Mo. Later the family settled in Appanoose Co., Iowa, where she was united in marriage to William VanBuskirk. This union was blessed in the birth of seven children, five of which survive her--four sons and one daughter.

In 1862 she became a widow. In 1865 she converted and united with the United Brethren Church, of which church she was a devoted member at the time of her death.

One daughter, Mrs. J. Q. Else, with whom she had made her home during the past ten years, and one son, Daniel VanBuskirk, were at her bedside when death came to claim her, at six o'clock, Friday morning, December 10, 1906, age 82 years, 7 months, and 26 days.

The funeral was held from the home of J. Q. Else, Saturday, December 11, at 10 a.m. Rev. B. A. Brooks of the Methodist Protestant church officiating. Burial in the Haddam cemetery.
