Edith Hart, 4, was traveling with her parents and brother as second class passengers aboard the Empress of Ireland. The entire family was lost and only Edith's body was found. She was identified by her grandfather who took her back to their home in Mortlach, Saskatchewan.

Monument for the five residents of Mortlach whose lives were lost in the sinking of the Empress of Ireland on May 20, 1914. Canada's worst peace time Maritime Disaster.

The Empress of Ireland
20 May 1914

Mortlach lost five residents in the sinking of the EMPRESS OF IRELAND, Canada's worst peace time Maritime Disaster. The Empress, outbound to Liverpool, was struck by a Norwegian Collier and sank in 14 minutes in the St. Lawrence River. A total of 1012 passengers and crew lost their lives.

Included in the casualties were John Scott, a farmer; William Hart, a farmer and owner of a butcher shop; Emma Hart and their two children, all from Mortlach. Of the 6 Saskatchewan victims, only the bodies of four year old Edith Hart and a Moose Jaw man were retrieved and brought back for burial. Edith Hart was identified by her grandfather, Roach because she had a scar the shape of the Great Lakes on her chest. Her grave is here along with a memorial to her family.

Hart monument in the Mortlach cemetery, Saskatchewan. Only Edith's body was recovered and is buried here.
