Another record gives his birth date as Sept. 6, 1791, as there are two death cert for him online, a year apart. I believe the correct year is 1868, as that is when it was recorded.

History of Branch county, Michigan, with illustrations and biographical sketches of some of its prominent men and pioneers.:

The first organization of a Baptist Church in Kinderhook occurred in 1837, and embraced 12 members, with the Rev. Freeman Burroughs acting as pastor. He was succeeded by Rev. E. R. Spear. When the township was divided the church was transferred to North Ovid, and the township was without a Baptist Church until the present regular Baptist Church of Kinderhook was organized, Oct. 25, 1856. The constituent members were Hiram McNall, John Stokes, Polly Stokes, ....."

"John Stokes, was a native of the Empire state, where he was married to Miss Polly Lamphere, who was also born in New York. Four of their children reached manhood or womanhood, namely: Mrs. Lucy A. Burdick (Mrs. Beriah), Mrs. Polly Yates (Mrs. Charles) , J. Woodbury (John Woodbury Stokes) and Amos Stokes. (Did not mention Lucinda Jane Stokes Truitt b. 1839 PA. Known as Lucinda Jane Stokes in 1850 census with John and Polly listed as parents, altho Polly would have had to have had Lucinda when she was in her late 40's....possible adoption of family member?)

After coming west the father and his family lived for several years in Indiana and then came to Michigan in 1842." (A TWENTIETH CENTURY History and Biographical Record OF BRANCH COUNTY, MICHIGAN
By REV. HENRY P. COLLIN, M. A.)

I used http://www.searchforancestors.com/utility/birthday.html to get the birthdate. I will have to double check the death date; it looks more like a "2" than a "12" to me for the day.

Polly Ann STOKES Yates b: 1819 in N.Y. Memorial ID 81058028
Lucy Ann STOKES Burdick b. 1819 in N.Y.* Memorial ID 69534976
* As Lucy was born in October, it is possible that Polly was born early that year (about January) and they were not twins. I would doubt that there was both a Polly Ann and a Lucy Ann born in 1819 to John and Polly, but they are both mentioned in the bio. I have yet to find them both together in a census, but at that period (pre 1850) only the head of household was named.

In an 1832 book about Branch County, there is a "J. Stokes, boot and shoe maker, 81 Chicago Rd." Later there is a James Stokes, a shoemaker, Chicago, West of Clay. Were there two, perhaps related, in business together? Or just James, mentioned twice on the list of businesses?

Died of "old age", a farmer.
