This stone is with the Andrew Shippy group of stones under a big tree, down towards the police post. He was a farmer.

At age 30, he is listed in the 1884 Michigan Census as a farm laborer, single. There is some confusion with Alexander. According to the same census, at the age of 30 he was living with a Minerva Burk, with Minerva being age 54 to Alexander's 30. (24 years difference, with her being older)Six years later, there is a marriage license for Minverva E. Burk and Alexander:

Event Date: 06 Aug 1890
Event Place: Coldwater, Branch County, Michigan

which gives his birth date as 1850 (same parents, Andrew Shippy and Christena Slater) and Minerva's birth date as 1855 (NY, father: William Burk, mother, Caroline Millard).

(Five years difference, with him being older)

There is a headstone in Case Cemetery, Scipio Township, Hillsdale, Michigan, United States for this couple, with the following dates:

Shippy, Alexander, 23 Jul 1850-(no burial date)
Shippy, Minerva, 14 Dec 1829-30 Mar 1893 (20 years difference, with her being older)

Now, it is unlikely that Alexander was born both in 1850 and 1853. Possible that he was married to Minerva, had a lovely headstone made when she died, and then remarried, and he was buried with neither of them (#2 was buried with her first husband) but instead buried with his family.

On one site he is listed as Alexander Theodore, and on another, Alexander Christopher. Both with the same parents. Did Andrew and Christena have two sons named Alexander, born 3 years apart? Are there two Andrew Shippys from that era, who are not related?

On his death certificate, it gives his wife as Elizabeth Fry, and that she predeceased him. (39398139)

Married 8 Jul 1894 Litchfield, Hillsdale, Michigan, United States to Elizabeth FRY AKA Elizabeth Slateman (b. 18 Sep 1841, Pennsylvania, United States, d. 17 Dec 1917, Scipio Township, Hillsdale, Michigan, United States), who predeceased him. He died at age 77. At the time of his death, he was living with his brother Frank, Fayette, Hillsdale, Michigan. I am not sure if he had children of his own, but raised two stepsons, Wardell Herche and Leland Herche.

There is a death record for an Elizabeth Shippy, housewife, of Scipio,Hillsdale Co., born Sept 18, 1841 in PA to Harry Slateman, which was reported by J.B. Frey. (Same death date as listed above.) She was buried in Todd Cemetery, according to the death certificate, but she is buried under her first husband's name.

If you check out the newspaper article, you will see that there was no love lost between Alexander and his wife's father...possibly because of the age difference?
I don't know what happened to the stepsons, (or how they got that last name.)
