Thurman Lester Newman, 83, of Fries Road, Galax, died at Twin County Community Hospital on September 21, 1992. He was born July 20, 1909, in Carroll County to Posey Newman and Ida Ayers Newman. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Lucy Newman, three stepsons, Freddie Sonner, Derby, Kan.; Jimmy Sonner and Leonard Sonner, Galax, and Alma Mabe, Hillsville, two grandchildren; eight step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren. Funeral was held September 24 at 1 p.m. in the chapel at Vaughan-Guynn Funeral Home conducted by Rev. Fred Jennings and the Rev. Leon Goad. Burial was in the Woodlawn Cemetery.
