John Fox was born 14 Oct 1854 in County Tyrone, Ireland the 8th of 11 children born to Michael and Mary McCullagh Fox. His parents immigrated to the US around 1858 and settled in Wabasha County, Minnesota. He married Johanna Marie Lynch (1854 – 1895) in Wabasha, Minnesota and they moved to Elora, Pembina, North Dakota where they were farmers. They had 6 children: twins Michael and Joseph who died as infants, Mary Julia who died in 1903 at age 7, and John Lawrence who died in 1902 at age 6. When his wife Johanna died in 1895 and John's sister Sarah Fox came to help raise the children. Their oldest son Leo Michael and youngest daughter Johanna Marie "Hannie" were raised with their cousin Emmett Fox (John's youngest brother Michael's son) whose own mother had died when he was 18 months old.
John spent the rest of his life in Pembina County, ND and lived with his son Leo and his family until his death on 12 Feb 1934 at age 79.
