Bill was born on September 21, 1911 on Petit Jean Mountain near Morrilton, Arkansas.
He was the youngest of Ten children born to William and Ida (Gasaway) Gottberg. During his youth he worked in the cotton fields. Tired of picking cotton, he came to Nebraska to the Humphrey and Lindsay area and worked as a farm hand. In the fall of 1933, he met Bob Cummings at the August Buettner farm where they were hired to husk corn. Bob's Brother-In-Law, who was moving out of Madison, owned a service station on the west end of Third Street (north side of the street) in Madison. Bob asked Bill to help him run the station and Bill agreed. The partnership began December 9, 1933.
On May 22, 1934, Bill married Irene Tetzloff, the daughter of Theodore and Louisa (Boysen) Tetzloff.
After being in the service station business for one year, someone purchased the station.
Irene's parents, Mr & Mrs. Tetzloff, then brought the lot across the street (south side-present location of Bob & Suzy's Service) and Mr. Tetzloff, a carpenter, built a station for Bob & Bill. Together they survivied the depression, dry summers, rugged winters and later purchased the station. Business grew and four additions were added through the years.
Bill was a fireman for 25 years and served on the Park Board for a number of years. He was on the board of directors for Countryside Home from 1971 - 1978. He also served on the Madison Public School Board for 2 years and was a avid Bowler.
Bill and Irene were both active members of Trinity Lutheran Church. Bill was a church elder and also served on the finance committee.
Bill and Irene had two children, a son, Gerald and a daughter, Kay.
In Bob & Bill's fortieth year in the station, on April 17, 1973, they sold their business to Robert and Suzette Jurgens.
Bill then opened a small repair shop by his home and repaired small engines. He died on August 31, 1980.
