Another Old Settler Gone.

William McMahan died at the residence of Silas McMahan near Fredonia, Friday, the 18th inst., in his 84th year; born in Wood county, Virginia, on the 9th day of March A.D., 1799. His parents were of Irish decent; with his parents, emigrated to Ohio in 1808, where the subject of this sketch grew to man's estate, without the advantage of schools of any description; when he was yet a boy of 15 he enlisted in the army and was, for over a year, actively engaged in "the war of 1812," serving his country in the wilds of Canada and northern Ohio, fighting the British and Indiana. After the war of 1812 he went back to Ohio; at the age of 22 years he married Miss Lettia McBain, with whom he lived until March 8, 1862, when she was called to that higher life, which she died with a perfect faith in reaching. They had eight children, only three of which survive them. In 1861 the deceased volunteered to serve in the Union army, and for five months at that age was a soldier in the 5th Kansas Cavalry, Co. G.; at the end of five months he was discharged on account of disiblity. He went out in the Price raid and was at the fight at Mound City; after he was discharged he came to Kansas from Iowa in 1867; to Wilson county in the year 1868, where he has made his home since. The deceased lived a long and eventful life, having contributed his full share in serving his country. He was an original Whig, at the formation of the Republican party, he became an ardent adherent and enthusiastic supporter, voting constantly with his party till the end of life. For 25 years he was a member of the United Brethren church and did in its fold. He was a sincere friend, and his children and grandchildren who knew him best, deeply mourn his death.
