Horrible Affair in Owen County

On Wednesday morning last a man named John Branham, living near Grats, in Owen County, murdered his wife, by splitting her head open with an ax. The murderer was promptly arrested, taken to Owenton and committed to the county jail. Early Thursday morning one hundred armed men surrounded the jail, got possession of the keys, took out Branham; conveyed him to the woods, a half mile from the town, and hung him until he was dead. The work was quietly done, no one but those in the jail knowing it till all was over.

The only motive we have heard assigned for the foul murder, is that Mrs. Branham had threatened to inform the authorities of a robbery committed by Branham not long since.

Mrs. Branham was of a respectible family and is represented as having been a good woman. Branham has had a bad reputation for several years. Two of his brothers reside in Owen county, and are regarded as good citizens. He was about 55 years old; his wife two or three years younger.

John Branham married Sarah Smith on July 5, 1866.
