She was born on January 13, 1922, in Moorhead, Mississippi, the second of four daughters of John Hays Jones and Ivey Davis Jones. She graduated from Greenville High School, Greenville, Mississippi, in 1940 and attended Belhaven College and the University of Alabama, where she was a member of Chi Omega.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her three sisters, Helen Jones Englander, Rose Jones Mershon; and Haysel Jones Ray and her husband, Vincent Walser Prospere. She is survived by her two sons, Reed Walser Prospere and wife, Jodie of Dallas, Texas; Peyton Davis Prospere of Jackson, Mississippi; and three grandchildren, Mary Peyton Prospere, Wade Walser Prospere, both of Dallas, Texas; and Chase Davis Prospere of Austin, Texas; and many loving cousins, nephews and nieces.
Ruth resided in Greenville virtually her entire life. She was active in numerous civic, social and church organizations, and was a dedicated member of the Altar Guild at St. James Episcopal Church in Greenville. She was beloved for her kindness and grace, and was at her best when tending to family and friends in need. She was relied upon for her good taste, judgment and discretion. She took pleasure in reading, cooking, backyard croquet and mahjong, and was fortunate to have lived among a community of lifetime friends in Greenville. Hers was a full, rewarding life, and she encountered her death with grace and courage, a lovely woman to the end.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the St. James Room at St. James Episcopal Church in Greenville, Mississippi, Sunday, March 6, 2011, with a graveside service to be held in the Greenville Cemetery at 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 7, 2011, with the family to receive friends afterwards across the street in the St. James Room at St. James Episcopal Church, Greenville, Mississippi. Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Jackson is assisting with the arrangements.
