Professional Football Player. For six seasons (1956, 1959 to 1963), he played at the left-guard position in the National Football League with the New York Giants, Philadelphia Eagles and Minnesota Vikings. Born Gerald Bernard Huth, he attended New Albany High School (Indiana) and played collegiate football at Wake Forest University. Selected by the Giants during the 24th round of the 1956 NFL Draft, he appeared in 74 career regular season games; Huth enjoyed a world championship season while a rookie as part of the Giants' team which won the NFL Title in 1956. His career was interrupted for two years as he served with the US Army, which included being stationed in Germany for a period. Upon returning home, he resumed his career with the Philadelphia Eagles and was a member of their squad which captured the NFL Championship in 1960; Huth provided a key block during the title game which allowed for running back Ted Dean to score the winning touchdown to preserve the victory over the Green Bay Packers. He would be chosen by Minnesota during the expansion draft in 1961, and play there for three seasons, where he was reunited with coach Norm Van Brocklin (who quarterbacked the Eagles during their 1960 championship year) and conclude his football career in 1963. Huth participated in the Eagles' festivities in September 2010, as they commemorated the 50th anniversary of their 1960 championship. He was inducted into the Wake Forest Hall of Fame in 2010. After Huff's death, his brain and spinal cord tissue were donated to Boston Univeristy for their study on effects of head injuries suffered by football players.
