Mary "Mamie" STRONG was the youngest daughter of Henry King STRONG and Mary (Alice ?) LOCKE (sometimes spelled LOCK, but I believe LOCKE is correct).

NOTE - Her death certificate from Rock Island County Illinois is State File Number 58933 and lists her as Mary LOWRY with some errors: Specifically - it lists her birth in block 8 as 6/19/1887 instead of 6/19/1877 as it probably should be, and her mother's maiden name as LOCK instead of LOCKE.

Of particular note - she died after 7m-22days in the East Moline State Hospital (aka Asylum) at 100 Hillcrest Rd, East Moline, Rock Island County, Illinois, USA. She was buried 13 Feb 1965 in the IOOF Cemetery, Coloma Twsp, Rock Falls, Whiteside County, Illinois, USA. That cemetery began as an Oddfellow's cemetery, but by about 2005, most of the Oddfellow's had passed away and operation of the cemetery was taken over by Coloma Township Cemetery.

Mary & Sam are in the oldest section 1 in the NE corner, space 20 north half (with 3 graves), with Sam in the Nothernmost grave #1, and Granny in grave 2, and an empty grave #3. Directly South of them (with a marker) is Washburn (?) in the south half of space 20. East of Mary & Sam is space 21 with Palmer ?

4 Jun 1880 census - Illinois Lee Dixon District 115 image 11 lines 1 to 9
finds her parents living in Dixon with 7 kids, Mary was age 2 (as of the official census date of 1 Jun 1880), but she was nearly 3 and would have turned 3 sometime in Jun 1880. (That shows she wasn't born in 1887 as reported on her death certificate.)

1890 census - haven't found the family yet.

1895 July 3 married 1st Charles L POWELL in Dixon, Lee, Illinois, USA.

10 months and 4 days later on...
1896 May 7 - "Mamie" gave birth to Earl Strong POWELL.

1900 census - Mary was 22 years old, living with her widowed mother & 3 of her older brothers: Henry K. Strong Jr, Arthur, and Edward. Her father, Henry K. Strong "Sr" was already dead in 1900 and her mother was 60. (Her father would have been about 72 if he were still alive.) On this census, the family was living at 519 W 2nd St, Dixon, Lee, Illinois, USA. This appears to be the same block as the current Loveland Community Center which was built around 1939 and has an address of 513 W 2nd St, Dixon IL. This suggests their house from 1900 was torn down prior to 1939 which allowed the Loveland Community Center to be built there.

1900 census also found her future 3rd husband living at 613 Avenue A with his 1st wife, Jennie F. and his 2 daughters: Cecil F. and Bessie M. (about 4 & 2), having been married to Jennie for 8 years.

1904 May 16 - she married 2nd Ishmael Bee NICHOLS in Sterling, Whiteside, Illinois, USA, by whom she had Glenn NICHOLS. She may have had another son, William NICHOLS who may have died as a child and is buried in the STRONG family plot #50 in Dixon.

1910 census - future husband #3, Sam Lowry, has moved into 901 Avenue A, Rock Falls with his wife & two daughters, (now about 14 & 12). It is a large 8 room house that he wns and they have many boarders. He was listed as a machinist in 1900, and working at the gas engine shop in 1910.

21 Jul 1919 she married Samuel E. LOWRY of Rock Falls, Whiteside, Illinois. This was his 2nd marriage, her 3rd... He had divorced his first wife (Jenny?) earlier that year or the year before. He had at least 2 daughters from that previous marriage. He was from Bakersville, Washington, Maryland, USA which is south of Hagerstown, near Williamsport, and Sharpsburg, west of Boonsboro MD in Washington County MD.

1920 and 1930 find Sam still at 901 Avenue A, but now married to Mary "Mamie" (STRONG). Sam & Mamie had no children together, but Earl POWELL was (divorced or on his second marriage) and may have been living with his mother at some point. Glenn NICHOLS continues to live with his mother and her 3rd husband, Sam. By 1933 or so, the family was joined by grand-daughter Eleanor POWELL.

Sam had a "boarding house" (?) at 901 Avenue A in Rock Falls, Whiteside. It became the family home during the during the depression years and they had a large "Victory Garden" during the WW-II years. Initialy owning most of that block, Sam occasionally sold off lots on that block where other houses were later built. They had numerous fruit trees, nut trees, and grapes. Her father was Henry King STRONG. Her father, or perhaps her grandfather was the Speaker of the House in Pennsylvania. The STRONG family had roots in Maine and Pennsylvania, and there were Sam's ties to Bakersville near Hagerstown, in Washington county, Maryland as well. Sons of Elder STRONG had moved to IL to take care of their father's interests in Illinois. These included a large farm near the Dixon State School property, as well coal mines in PA and IL or WI. One of the STRONG men was bridgekeeper / toll taker (?) of the Truesdale Bridge that collapsed in Dixon, Lee, Illinois, USA.

"Granny" (Strong) Lowry raised her granddaughter, Eleanor, in the house at 901 Ave A. Her second surviving son, Glenn Nichols raised his family there, marrying Jane Pfundstein (?) and their 3 children. The house was divided so granny had part of the downstairs and some of the rooms upstairs. The house had a front and back staircase.

Granny fed every stray animal that came along. One day a stray cat that she had been feeding bit her. An unrelated visit to the doctor led her to remark on "Just look where that nasty cat bit me!". The doctor advised her to keep an eye on the animal and it later died on their 3-sided back porch. The cat's body was put in a brown paper bag and was sent off (to a vet?) (in a taxi - since they didn't have a car) where it was determined that the cat had Rabies. Granny had to undergo painful Rabies shots into her stomach. (Which led to dire warnings during my childhood about animals that might rabies.)
