Mrs. Emma GUITNER BOOKWALTER was born in Greencastle, Pa., 1847, and was graduated at Otterbein University, Ohio, in 1867. She was principal of the ladies department of Western college, Iowa, from 1868 to 1872, and was married to Rev. Lewis BOOKWALTER in 1871. To them were born seven children: the first died in infancy. The six living are Alfred BOOKWALTER, of Columbus, O., state Y. M. C. A. secretary; Ethel, wife of Rev. Otto W. BURTNER, of Ansonia, Conn.; Grace, who, having taught two years in Mt. Ida school for girls, Boston, and afterward engaged in social settlement work in Boston, came here to assist her mother and during the latter months to take charge of the home; Alice, wife of Arthur A. WARD of Ceylon, India; Lulu, at home and under appointment of the American board to go to Ceylon as a missionary; and Ruth, a teacher, with one year to finish at Oberlin college. All except Ruth are college or university graduates. Mrs. BOOKWALTER came here with her family in March. Her health had not been good for some months previous, but nothing serious developed until in the middle of summer, when she was obliged to take her bed. During the following months she made a brave battle for life, but in spite of all that medical skill and nursing could do she passed away last Saturday evening. She was 63 years old.

The funeral services were held at the home Tuesday morning at 10:30 o'clock. The services were conducted by Rev. Theodore JORGENSEN, pastor of the Congregational church at Seneca, assisted by Rev. L. L. HSSENPFLUG. Mr. JORGENSEN is an old time friend of the family, being in their home while a student at Leander Clark college in Toledo, Iowa, when Dr. BOOKWALTER was president of that college. The Congregational quartette composed of Thos. STEVENS, Martin BARNUM, Miss Bonnie LOVE and Miss Luella NEIBLING, sang. The body bearers were Samuel BIERER, James SHADEL, Dr. W. W. NYE, Thos. STEVENS, John BARNUM and D. N. GRAHAM. Burial was made in the Hiawatha cemetery.
