Theodore Norman Mullen was born on New Years day, January 1, 1902 in Middleton, IL; his parents were Edward Henry Mullen and Josephine (Josie) Cullinane Mullen. His father owned and operated a General Store in Middleton. Theodore was the second oldest of three sons. His oldest brother, Edward Richard Mullen, was born on December 6, 1900 and his youngest brother, James Vincent was born July 8, 1907, both in Middleton, IL where they were all raised together.

Josephine (Josie) Mullen died on January 3, 1928; two years later on December 4, 1930 Edward Henry married his second wife, Ruth Amy Graham Mullen. Edward and Ruth Mullen eventually moved to Missouri where they had two sons; William Henry who was born on January 30, 1934 and Bernard who was born on January 28, 1936 in Seymore, Missouri. Later, the family moved to Jericho Springs, Missouri where they lived on a farm until Edward Henry died on November 10, 1949.

Theodore lived near Springfield, Illinois where he worked as a coal miner. He met and married his first wife there. Together, they had three children: James, Theodore Jr. and Patricia. Lifestyle issues created a great deal of difficulty for Theodore, which caused him to abandon his wife and children. He simply disappeared, family members did not know his whereabouts for many years. Finally, Theodore resurfaced in Dragerton, Utah where he worked in the mines. He had remarried; he and his new wife, Birdie, had seven children. On January 24,1948 while working in the Horse Canyon Mine #7 he was crushed to death when a large piece of machinery fell on him. He was 46 years old. He is buried in Price Cemetery, in Price Utah. In December, 1949, while working as a farm laborer, Theodore's youngest brother, Vincent, was killed in a tractor accident.

Theodore's father died in 1949 on his farm in Jericho Springs, Missouri. In June, 1951 his widow, Ruth, moved with her two boys to Chelan, Washington. On the way they stopped to visit Theodore's widow, Birdie, who was residing in Grand Junction, Colorado with her children. On 12 June 1953, while on a family outing at the Gunnison River, Birdie and her two oldest sons, William Edward and Patrick Carrol drowned. Later Birdie's body was recovered but the bodies of her two sons were never found.
