Ernestine Berhardine Caroline Gillig was born on the 15th of January of 1859 in Victoria County, Texas. Caroline was the daughter of German immigrants John J. Gillig and Friedaricka Augusta Carolina Luise Vogt. On Tuesday, the 25th of November of 1879, Caroline married Louis George "L.G." Wilkerson. L.G. Wilkerson was the son of John W. Wilkerson, a native of Biloxi, Mississippi (or Alabama) and Mary Ann Atzenhoffer, a native of New York. Caroline's husband L.G. served for several years as an Alderman for the City of Victoria. L.G. and Caroline were the parents of one child: Cora J. who was born in Victoria, Victoria County, Texas on th 2nd of June of 1888. On the 17th of December of 1900, the District Court of DeWitt County, Texas granted L.G. Wilkerson a divorce from Caroline. On Saturday, the 22nd of December of 1900, the Victoria Advocate (a newspaper published in Victoria County, Texas) reported the divorce: "Among the district court items published in yesterday's Cuero Star we notice the following pertaining to Victorians: 'L.G. Wilkerson vs. C. Wilkerson, trial by jury, verdict for plaintiff for divorce and for defendant for all property belonging to the community estate of plaintiff and defendant.'" Caroline Gillig Wilkerson died at the age of 89 at her home on North Navarro Street in Victoria at 5:30 o'clock, Saturday morning, the 13th of November of 1948. Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon the 14th of November at 4 o'clock at the McCabe-Carruth Funeral Home Chapel. Burial services were held at the Evergreen Cemetery in Victoria with the pastor of the Trinity Lutheran Church of Victoria, The Reverend J. D. Schedler officiating. Pallbearers were: Clifton Fromme, Leonard Gillig, Lee Gillig, Charles Speck, Frank Thom and Oliver Lee Thom. The Sunday edition of the Victoria Advocate included in her obituary: "Mrs. Wilkerson was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and of the Ladies Aid Society and was a highly esteemed member of the community." Caroline's parents John J. and Friedaricka Gillig are also buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Victoria, Texas.
