Olaf Tveitbakk, 91, of Clearbrook, Minn., died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011, at the Clearwater Memorial Hospital in Bagley, Minn.
Olaf was born May 21, 1919, to Bjorn and Ida Tveitbakk in Hickory Township, Pennington County. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. He attended a rural school north of Gully and also in Gully. Olaf served in the Army from 1944-1946. He spent three seasons of employment in Greenland" North Atlantic Constructors. He was a heavy equipment operator and worked for many companies and belonged to the 49er's for 27 consecutive years. After his retirement in 1983, Olaf worked a few years for farmers. He enjoyed snowmobiling, visiting with family and friends and driving three trips to Alaska, seven trips to Norway, and a snowmobiling trip to Moran, Wyo. at Togwotee, Mt. Lodge. Olaf also enjoyed wood working. He made many lefse sticks, clocks and toys for the grandkids. Recently Olaf was a resident of the Good Samaritan Center in Clearbrook, Minn.
Olaf was married to Violet Johnson on Oct. 11, 1940, until her death in 1984. He married Harriet Shellum on May 21, 1994. Olaf was a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church and Melvin Johnson American Legion Post No. 256 of Clearbrook, and the Sons of Norway.
He is survived by his wife, Harriet Tveitbakk of Clearbrook, Minn.; daughter, Marion Anderson of Aurora; son-in-law, Orlyn Anderson, a resident of the Minnesota Veterans Home in Silver Bay, Minn.; grandchildren, Michael (Kathy Jo) Anderson of Lake Elmo, Minn., Naethen (Kim) Anderson of Mosinee, Wis.; stepson, Edward (Debbie) Shellum of Elk River, Minn.; stepdaughter, Judi (Dave) Engebretson of Clearbrook, Minn.; stepgrandchildren, Shawn (Niki) Groshong, Jenny (Brian) Bakke of Clearbrook, Minn., Jessica (Carl) Kuhl of St. Paul, Thor Shellum of Bloomington; stepgreat-grandchildren, Ashley and Jeremy Groshong, and Tristan and Damen Bakke of Clearbrook, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Violet; and brothers, Halvor, John, Louie and Thor.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Clearbrook, Minn., with the Rev. Robert Kirchman officiating. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the Cease Family Funeral Home in Bagley. Burial will be at Silver Creek Cemetery in Clearbrook, Minn. The Cease Family Funeral Home of Bagley assisted with the arrangements. Military honors will be accorded by the Melvin Johnson American Legion Post No. 256 of Clearbrook
