Eleanor Wheeler

NOTI _- The funeral will be held today, Sept. 11, for Eleanor C. Wheeler, of Noti, who died Sept. 8 of age-related causes. She was 91.

Wheeler was born July 1, 1912, in Coos Bay to Rollie and Ida Chandler Corthell. She married Noble Wheeler in Coos Bay on December 26, 1938.

She received a bachelor's degree in education from Willamette University in 1935.

She worked as a teacher from 1935 until 1976 and taught at Sams Valley High School, Pleasant Hill High School, Noti Grade School and Fern Ridge Middle School. She will be remembered as a successful teacher who created successful students, from University of Oregon student body presidents to students who are successful in business.

The Fern Ridge School District created the Eleanor Wheeler Award to honor and recognize their top language arts teachers and provide them with funding to continue their educations.

She lived in this area for 68 years and her interests included showing sheep, sewing and traveling.

She was an active member in the Noti Church of Christ, where she played the piano for many years.

She enjoyed school activities and sports. She especially enjoyed family activities.

Survivors include her husband; four sons, Darrell of Oakridge, Bruce of Boise, Glenn of Keizer and Grant of Jacksonville, Fla.; two daughters, Darlene Cannon of Vaughn and Barbara Haniuk of Springfield; 20 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren.

Two grandsons, Steve Wheeler and Greg Haniuk, died previously.

Visitation will be held today from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Noti Church of Christ. Today's service will be held at 1 p.m. at the church. Burial will be today at Oak Hill Cemetery in Eugene. Musgrove Family Mortuary in Eugene is in charge of arrangements.
