John Altmiller, an old resident of Hazleton, quietly passed away yesterday afternoon at 3.45 o'clock at his residence on South Cedar street. Mr. Altmiller's illness dates back two years, when he was taken ill with a tumor on the left side of the neck. Despite the efforts of physicians to remove the same it gradually grew worse and became so painful that four weeks ago Mr. Altmiller was obliged to take to his bed.
Mr. Altmiller was a native of Germany, and located in this city in the year 1857. He was a blacksmith by trade, an occupation that he followed ever since coming to this place. For the past five years he was employed at the Valley shops. He also served two years on the borough police force.
He was united in marriage on November 12, 1865, to Miss Gicking. From this union four children were born, three daughters and one son, all of whom survive to mourn his loss. Besides these he leaves two brothers and one sister, viz.: Charles C., Justus and Mrs. George Craig.
He was a member of Christ German Lutheran church, Workingmen's Beneficial Association, Harugari Lodge and Veteran Legiun. He was 51 years of age. The funeral will take place Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Interment in Vine street cemetery.
