John Kerr was the son of Rev. David Kerr and Nancy Reid (née Oates) Kerr. John was born on Sept 2, 1868 in Palestine, Bradley County, Arkansas. He was the brother of Jennings Kerr (1860 – 1926), Franklin T. Kerr (1867 – 1925 ), David Kerr, Jr. (1870 – 1887) and Laura (1874 - 1878). In late May 1874 after the death of his parents; John and his brothers, Frank & David moved to Cedar Springs, SC to live with their aunt and uncle, Rev. Henry T. and Josephine Kerr Sloan. Reverend Sloan was minister of Cedar Springs A.R.P. Church from 1850 – 1890.

On November 25, 1895, John Kerr married Miss Lois Atlanta Muse, daughter of Rev. Joseph B. Muse and Essie Devlin Muse, at Cedar Springs A.R.P. Church. They moved to a farm just up the road from Cedar Springs and there they started a family which included Laura Rebecca Kerr Brown (1896 – 1972), Helen Muse Kerr Henagan (1900 – 1987) and Joseph Jennings Kerr (1904 – 1990).

John Kerr died at his home on October 1, 1943. He is buried beside his beloved wife Lois in the cemetery at Cedar Springs A.R.P. Church.
