Hollywood Film Industry Figure. He was recognized as an American film and television writer, producer, and director with a nearly 40-year career. Born into a New York City Jewish family, his career started in the 1940s as a teenager, working as an assistant to his uncle, Hollywood producer Sam Katzman. He wrote and produced several classic television series such as 20 episodes of "Route 66," 84 episodes of "Gunsmoke," 90 episodes of "The Wild, Wild West," 25 episodes of "Hawaii Five-O," and 326 episodes of "Dallas." The 1996 made-for-television movie "Dallas: J.R. Returns" was his last work as the executive producer. He received recognition in 1972 for his work on "Gunsmoke." Of his 42 episodes in the series "Petrocelli," he was nominated for the Best Television Drama for the 1976 episode "Mark of Cain." He was nominated for a Primetime Emmy for "Dallas" in the category of Outstanding Drama in 1980 and 1981.
