There's a new '63 Chevy Impala speeding down the highways of Heaven today! At the wheel, listening to a "good orchestra," and not worrying about ANOTHER speeding ticket, is Maryan Grace (Sorensen) Hoven.
.
Born August 12, 1915 in Martinsburg, Nebraska, to Danish immigrant homesteaders, she passed away on March 17, 2009. The youngest of nine children, Maryan was always proudest of her four-year graduate nurses' degree from St. Joseph Hospital in Sioux City, Iowa, class of 1936. She referred to her "training" throughout her life and used her nursing knowledge to help others. In the Shoreline, WA, neighborhood where she and LeRoy lived for 62 years, she was "family counselor", "pediatrician", "decorator", "teacher", "confidante", and "best friend" to three generations of devoted and grateful neighbors. She and Roy were also prize-winning big band dancers, her harmonica and accordion tunes were legendary, her poetry unique and she volunteered in her community for many organizations. A dancing wife with a great sense of humor, a devoted and loving mother, adoring "Bomba", and sweet "GeeGee", Maryan lived her life in a simple, loving, unassuming yet profound way. "I never give advice, because you already know what you need to do," was her favorite piece of advice!
.
She changed the spelling of her name when she was 20 and thereafter was also known as Toots, Sis, Mom, Bomba, Meena, Mert, Ant, Mern, Mary Pops, and finally GeeGee. Constant phone calls, dedicated weekly card writers, countless visits by family, friends and dear neighbors, especially Dyna, Bob, Kelsey and Josh; each of us knew she always had time for us.
.
Her husband of 69 years, LeRoy, preceded her in death in June 2007.
She is survived by her loving and devoted daughters, Karen Hoven (Bob Johnson) and Christy Buren (Jim Hell); grandson, Tyler Hell and his wife, Erin; great-grand-children, Malaki and Isabella. Her adored granddaughter, Heather, was her "sidekick" from birth through pre-school field trips, unsolicited health advice "put your hat on!", unheeded travel fears, great support for "husband choice", Kurt Triplett, and deep love for the "little ones", Matthew, Daniel and Meredith.
.
We will miss your harmonica birthday concerts, your crazy sense of humor, your lack of compliance, and most of all, your truly unconditional love.
.
So strike up the Big Band, preferably Guy Lombardo or Lawrence Welk, Maryan and Roy are "Dancing with the Stars!"
.
Remembrances may be made to Children's Hospital, where Maryan volunteered for many years.
At her request, a celebration of her life will be held this summer.
