My 3rd Great grandfather, Steven (II) was named after his older brother, Steven, who served in the Revolution as a young Dragoon with the Continental Army's "Westchester Horse", and who was killed in action by British troops near the town of Bedford, New York on July 11, 1779. A farmer most of his life, Steven II was appointed a Justice of the Peace of Hadley, Saratoga co in 1824.
As a note, the Ambler family (who came to America sometime prior to the year 1637) were co-founders of the town of Bedford, New York although they did not actually live there when Bedford was burned down by the British in 1779 ( ie;when Steven II was killed). I understand that General Washington was quite aware of Bedford's burning as he received dispatches about it and I've always suspected that the (quite factual incident) concerning Bedford (long, but incorrectly attributed to the British Colonel Banastre Tarleton) was used as the basis for the ( fictitious )incident of the burning and murder of the townspeople (by "Col. Tavington") in the movie "The Patriot", starring Mel Gibson.
