Organized at Princeton and Indianapolis, Ind., and mustered in September 8, 1862. ***** Mustered out June 22, 1865.
Joel. when a resident of Newberry, Greene County, Indiana, enlisted, as a Corporal, on August 13, 1862. He mustered into Company K of the 80th Indiana Infantry the same day. He was subsequently wounded, at the Battle of Perrysville, on October 8, 1862, and discharged due to his disability, on July 13, 1863. He was awarded a pension based on this disability in 1872.

Joel Halbert was the son of Seth Halbert (1795-1878) and Frances CHARLES (1799-1858). In about 1846, Joel married Mehatabel UNKNOWN, an Indiana native who was born about 1821 and whose parents were from Vermont.
Joel and Mehatabel had at least four children; a daughter, Laura H., born in Indiana about 1847; a son, Seth J. born in Indiana about 1851; a son, Asa Charles born in Indiana about 1854; and a daughter, [Name unknown], who married an Unknown Myers, with whom she had at least one child, a son, Clinton, born in Ohio in about 1886.
Joel and his family relocated to Fresno County, California, before 1880. The census of that year found him raising pigs and growing barley near Millerton, CA. Living with him were his wife, Mehatabel, and sons Seth and Asa. Mehatabel died of cancer on March 3, 1894. Asa died of stomach cancer at the age of 44 years on July 29, 1900.
