William Duncan's Stand Against the Jacobites Reverend William Robert Duncan
was born January 7, 1628 in Perth, Firth Of Tay, Perthshire, Scotland and died
January 1, 1690 in Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland - Beheaded. He was buried at the
Foot Of Mount Schiehallion, Perthshire, Scotland. He was a Covenant Presbyterian
Minister of Glascoe, Scotland who refused to take a Jacobite Oath when ordered
to do so by King Charles of England. In accordance with the King's orders he was
beheaded and buried as a martyr and his family fled the country to the Northern
Neck of Virginia in the United States. He married August 29, 1657 in Scotland to
Susan Sarah Haldane who was born 1635 in Perthshire, Perth, Scotland and the
daughter of Richard Haldane (b. about 1609 in Gleneagles Pass, Killiecrankie,
Scotland) and of Mary Kennet (b. about 1610 in Scotland).

William Duncan, the son of John Duncan, was born January 7, 1627/28 in Perth
near the Firth of Tay, Perthshire, Scotland. He was beheaded January 2, 1690/91
near Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland. William was also known as the Reverend William
Duncan. He fell martyr during the religious troubles that afflicted Scotland at
the time Charles the second was restored to the throne and William refused to
take the Jacobite oath. He received his degree in theology from the Kings
College at Aberdeen in 1648. When William was ejected from office for informing
against members of the resistance to Episcopalianism, his children fled to
Virginia where they settled in the region of Northern Neck. He married Sarah
Haldane, daughter of Richard Haldane and Mary Kennett, on August 29, 1657 in
Scotland.


William Robert Duncan and Susan Haldane had the following children

William Duncan was born in or near Perthshire, Scotland, where the family originated. In about 1720 the family was found in Dumphries, on the eastern shore of Virginia. In 1722 they were found in Culpepper county, Virginia.

"400 acres (N.L.) Henrico Co on Thomas Moore's Br. A branch of Deep Creek of Licking Hole; Adj. William Spurlock 17 Sept 1731--P 338 -- 40 Shillings. (This man is probably related to the Duncan families in Virginia.) The interesting part is the name of Thomas Moore. In the next generation the widow of John Duncan Sr., Rachel, married "a man named Moore" in about the same area and left for Kentucky, according to another record. From William Duncan's family Bible printed at Oxford U. 1752.

24 Feb 1781, Will of William Duncan of Parish of Bloomfield, Culpepper Co: to my son Charles Duncan, 25 pounds specie; to son James Duncan all that tract of land on which I now live with the apurtences, also my desk and book box; the residue be sold, the money be equally divided among my sons Rawley Duncan, William Duncan, John Duncan deceased, Joseph Duncan and Charles Duncan and my daughter Anne Roberts; that the part intended for my son John Duncan Deceased be equally divided amongst all his lawful children sons and daughters; as also all the part intended or alloted to my daughter Anne Roberts be equally divided amongst all my said daughter Anne's children both sons and daughters. Appoint sons Joseph and James Duncan and friend John Bradford exec. Witnesses William Hugh, William Browning, Shadrach Browing. Proved 15 Oct. 1788 on oaths of William and Shadrach Browning.

William Duncan of Dumfrieshire settled in Virginia in 1724 and married there Ruth Rawley, a daughter of Matthew Rawley, a Church of England man who came from Wales in 1720.
Deed: 13 Dec. 1774, William Duncan of Brumfield Parish, Culpepper Co., VA for natural love...to son James Duncan, 51 acres more or less on the north river of the Gourd Vine River, adjacent north side of the rivr, corner Capt. John Strother's Land formerly my son Rawley's. Immigration: 1719, Scotland to colony of Virginia. Individual note: Five of his sons were credited with military service in the Revolutionary War. Military Service: Furnished provisions for the troops of the militia. Will: 24 Feb 1781, Parish of Bloomfield, Culpepper Co, VA. Will probated: 15 Oct. 1781, Culpepper Co. VA.

("Ancestors of George William Paul Green" on Genealogy.com say that he was born in Dumfrieshire, Scotland 16 Apr. 1692, and died 11 Feb 1781 in Culpepper County, VA).
Five of his children were credited with serving in the Revolutionary War. He was feeble when it started but gave provisions for the troops. They were John Pekin, Joseph, William, Charles and William. John died at Moore's Fort at the hand of Chief Logan. Daniel Boone and his family were the head of that fort, but was not there at the time. The Duncan families had been moved there for safety in the "Indian Season," and John had ventured outside, possibly to check traps.
