Henry Wilkerson was born on the 26th of May of 1875 in Meyersville, DeWitt County, Texas. He was the son of John W. Wilkerson, a native of Biloxi, Mississippi and Mary Ann Atzenhoffer, a native of New York. At 8 p.m. on Wednesday, the 25th of October of 1899, Henry married Katie Alfredia Louisa Knopp at the German Lutheran Church in Cuero, DeWitt County, Texas with a reception following at Turner Hall. Katie Alfredia was the daughter of Joseph Knopp, a native of Nassau, Germany and Johanna H. Niedermeyer, a native of Braunsweig, Lower Saxony, Germany. Henry and Katie lived for many years at 703 E. Goodwin in Victoria, Texas and sometime in the late 1950's they moved to Houston, Harris County, Texas. Henry died a widower at the age of 89 years on the 17th of January of 1965 in a nursing home in Corpus Christi, Nueces County, Texas. Henry was buried on the 18th of January of 1965 beside his wife (who had predeceased him) in the Wilkerson family plot located in Section Six, Lot 24 in the Evergreen Cemetery, Victoria, Victoria County, Texas. Katie and Henry were the parents of four children: Henry J., Josephine Karoline, Eunice Elizabeth and Anna Lucille. Henry was a veteran of World War I and an active member of the First English Evangelical Lutheran Church. For over forty years, Henry worked for the railroads and when he retired in 1938, the Victoria Advocate (a newspaper published in Victoria County, Texas) reported in the Southern Pacific Line News section: "Engineer Henry Wilkerson swung down off the Victoria yard engine May 25 and when he left the 809 at the roundhouse he ended forty-two continuous years of railroad service and entered his retirement. Mr. Wilkerson started his railroad career at Victoria as fireman with the old NYT&M and GWT&P Lines in '96 [1896] and served his company faithfully and efficiently during the long tenure of his service. In the leisure to come Mr. Wilkerson plans to enjoy life and do the things to his liking. This fine old gentleman will be missed in the railroad swing and it is the wish of his host of friends that his retirement will be one of health and happiness."
