22 OCT 2020, transfer. Added gender. 1) Original bio from creator of memorial is below divider. Added to virtual cemetery for the Goingsnake Massacre of 1872, he is mentioned in news reports as one of the survivors. 2) The Indian Home Guard were volunteer infantry regiments recruited from the Five Civilized Tribes of Indian Territory to support the Union during the American Civil War.The leaders of all of the Five Civilized Tribes signed treaties with the Confederacy at the start of the Civil War. Many of the tribal members, however, did not support the Confederacy, and, not being organized, were driven from Indian Territory with a large loss of life. Most fled to Kansas and Missouri. Many of the "Loyal" Indians volunteered for Union duty in order to get control back from the Confederate generals. The Indian Home Guard regiments fought mostly in Indian Territory and Arkansas. It was mainly due to these Loyal Indians that the Five Civilized Tribes were able to retain any of their lands following the end of the Civil War.

06 DEC 2020 SAC w/information: The birth and death dates on the (later erected) monument are in error. Please check the contemporary obit (longer one) in the picture gallery. Given his date of death and age of 91 y 4m. His dates are as I have corrected them. I have a letter from a personal friend of Redbird's, Rev. Davie Hogan, saying Redbird thought his exact date of birth to be unrecorded and unknown. But he remembers he was twelve at the time of the Cherokee Treaty so 1807 is accurate.
