OBIT: Fairhaven Herald; Fairhaven, WA; 6 Apr 1892; Wed., p. 1
Died, March 31sr, of consumption, at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Slater, in Ferndale Precinct, Mrs. Maggie Hope, wife of John Hope, aged 35 years. This is the 4th death in Mr. Hope's family in the past year. A year ago this month his eldest son George, aged 16, after suffering for months with the dreaded disease, consumption, was the first to be taken. Then, during the early summer, a pair of twin babies that had come to brighten the home of the afflicted ones, like the rose nipped in the bud, faded, withered, and died. The mother's deep sorrow, delicate condition, home duties, with hope and courage gone, proved inevitable. Human aid was of no avail. She sank beneath the ravages of the disease, whispering messages with a particular farewell to all. This frail form was soon in the cold embrace of death. Mrs. Hope had been a resident of Mt. View for 15 years. She proved a good, kind neighbor, an affectionate wife and mother, caring more for the welfare of her home and family than for the pleasures of the world. The people deeply sympathize with the relatives in their great affliction. A bereaved husband, with 4 little girls, an aged father and mother, several brothers and one sister, besides a large circle of friends, are left to mourn her loss. The funeral services were held at the home of her parents on Saturday at 2 p.m., Rev. Wells officiating. The remains were taken to Enterprise Cemetery for burial.
