"No longer by my side....but Forever in my Heart."

There is something about a cocker spaniel. It's as if God took the best features of a dog and mixed it with the best features of a cat.

I found Monte deserted in a strip mall pet shop. He was four months old and shoved into a cage up high. He looked at me and I tried not to look at him. He kept whining and looking at me, his little stubby tail wagging. He knew he could work it.

I fell in love immediately. Even though I couldn't afford him or to keep him - I immediately wrote out a check and begged the owner not to cash it until payday.

In just a few days he turned into my absolute best friend. We went through happiness, sadness, good and bad times and he was always tuned into my moods. If I was having a bad day he was in my lap in a moment being cute and cuddly.

His greatest pleasure was running after his tennis ball and jumping into the pool. The first weekend he was mine I was swimming when I felt something jump on my back. The fearless little spaniel had jumped in the pool to be with me. He didn't know how to swim yet and I had to hold his bottom up until he got the hang of it. From then on he was always swimming with his little cocker spaniel web feet.

He hiked all over North Carolina and Florida with me. One day he jumped into Lake Toxaway and took off for the other side.

That same week, while hiking alone with him at Toxaway, I turned onto a side path that went past an old shed. Monte began to growl and stopped solid in the path (he never growled). He was very insistent that we not go down that path and even showed his fangs. I'll never know what he didn't like about it, but I turned and ran back up the path with him right behind me. I had never seen him act that way before.

He loved to sleep on my lap and I spent hours cuddling with him while I tried to read a book over his snoring.

Monte suffered from seizures and perhaps they contributed to his passing --- he died in middle of the night with no warning from a brain hemorrhage. I found him early the next morning and it still haunts me that he died so young and without anyone holding him. I miss him to this very day.....
