Born in Wilhelmshaven, Germany to Gottlieb and Anna (Henning) Tietze, Anna came to Scranton in 1885. She had a sister Lena who either returned to Germany or stayed behind in the first place, and a brother Frederick who settled in Scranton as a fruit and vegetable merchant. Anna married Ulrich Zurfluh in 1897 and they raised three daughters. Ulrich was a carpenter and highly skilled cabinetmaker who had emigrated from Switzerland.
