Ulrich Zurfluh was born at Meiringen, Bern, Switzerland where he worked as a mountain hunting guide in his early adulthood, then learned carpentry and became a master carver and cabinetmaker. He was listed as a "Carver" on the ship's manifest when he sailed to America in 1883. He married Anna Tietze in Scranton, Pa on Sep 30, 1897 and he made an ornate inlaid parlor table for display at the 1904 St Louis Exposition, but due to an illness he was unable to finish it in time. He had a brother Simon, also a carpenter, who lived in Scranton during the 1880's and again in the 1920's, part of that time at Ulrich's house, before returning to Switzerland shortly before Ulrich's death. Several of his cousins came to America; some as carpenters, others as woodsmen and dairy farmers. Ulrich and Anna raised three daughters Violet, Helen and Frieda.
