LANYON - Steven L. Akins, 63, of Lanyon, passed away on Thursday, September 2, 2010, at the Hamilton County Hospital as result from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Memorial services will be held on Wednesday, September 8th, at 10:30 a.m. in the Chapel of the Laufersweiler-Sievers Funeral Home with the Rev. Bill Kerns, First Christian Church, officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jane of Lanyon; son, Jason Akins and his wife Kerry; daughter, Heather Akins of Harcourt; grandsons, Lincoln and August Akins both at home; brother, Tim Akins and his companion Gordon Horton of Cheyenne, WY; sisters, Luanne Akins of Fort Dodge; Laurie Arndt and her husband Norman of Fort Dodge; and a sister-in-law, Mary Jo Olson of Fort Dodge.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Gayle and Marjorie Haring Akins.

Steven Loyal Akins was born on May 14, 1947, in Fort Dodge. He attended schools here and graduated from Fort Dodge Senior High School. He then attended Iowa Central Community College; followed by his graduation from Buena Vista University. On January 25, 1969, he was united in marriage to Mary Jane Barnett and the couple made their home in Davenport. He then served with the U.S. Army in Alaska for 2 years until his honorable discharge. Steven was employed with Oscar Meyer as a supervisor for 10 years. The couple moved to Lanyon in 1980. He then went to work for Iowa Illinois Gas and Electric. The company was later named Mid American Energy where Steven was a supervisor for 27 years until his retirement in 2007.

He enjoyed listening to 50's and 60's music, hot rods, and cruising around in his Studebaker. Steven loved spending time with family, friends, and most importantly his grandchildren. He was an avid member of the Road Rebels Car Club.
