Second son of theologian Henry Ware (1764-1845) and his first wife Mary (Clarke) Ware (1762-1805), John Ware was an eminent Boston physician, a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences who served as President of the Massachusetts Medical Society from 1848 to 1852. John's wife Helen Lincoln, whose father Levi was also a physician, was a fifth cousin of Abraham Lincoln. In February, 1846 John applied for a passport to travel abroad with "two ladies", possibly his wife and oldest daughter Lucy. He applied again in 1854, this time with his wife and "four young ladies", possibly his three youngest daughters and a servant, Lucy being married by then.
